As a couple you bring to therapy the history of your relationship, the dynamic you have created between you, and your collective hopes and fears in the relationship. You also arrive with each of your individual experiences, hopes, fears and potentials. Romantic relationships have a powerful way of activating us, both in our wellness and our deepest wounding. It is not uncommon for people in relationships to begin having a very different emotional experience of themselves, sometimes feeling more joyous, open and passionate, and other times more vulnerable, insecure, angry or reactive. Whatever your experience, couples’ therapy can be a powerful vehicle to explore what comes up for you in relationship and use those challenges to stretch and grow, while enhancing your over-all connection.
I invite couples of all orientations and backgrounds: straight, LGBT, and cross-cultural. This is a place where you will be respected in who you are.
In couples’ therapy I can help you to:
- communicate through challenging issues and conflict
- resolve impasse
- explore commitment and fidelity/infidelity
- navigate intimacy (emotional and sexual)
- break out of dysfunctional patterns
- work through family issues
- maintain relational health
- enhance connection
- build trust
- learn communication skills
I highly encourage people to consider couples’ counseling as a tool for relationship maintenance. There is no need to hold out for illness in order to actively seek health. Therapy is a powerful venue for consciously building your connection. It’s an opportunity to expand your understanding of one another and your dynamic together, and to learn skills that will help you to stay healthy and loving as a couple.
For couples who choose to end their relationship, I provide a safe environment for them to be clear in making this decision. I support them in the challenging feelings and decisions they must face together, and help them to end their relationship with more grace, understanding and compassion.
